天涯海角社区 Commencement Celebrates A.A. Degree Recipients

天涯海角社区 recognized its Spring 2025 graduates for earning their A.A. degrees during a held on Friday, May 2.
President Paul Broadie II commended the Class of 2025 for their perseverance and dedication, especially first-generation college students. He encouraged them to inspire others by continuing to break new ground.
Among the graduates honored was John Laplaca, who once doubted college was for him. Through the TRIO program, he found support, success and a passion for learning. He now plans to pursue a dual degree in astronomy and astrophysics.
Dr. Broadie also recognized Brian Rowland, a veteran who overcame homelessness and uncertainty about his future. Rowland graduates with a 3.9 GPA and is a finalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship.
鈥淓ach of you has been resilient, committed and unstoppable,鈥 Dr. Broadie said.
Graduates also heard from Student Body President Jorge Nu帽ez, who gave the keynote address. Nu帽ez, who graduated alongside his classmates, shared how his perspective had shifted.
鈥淚t's a combination of joy, relief, pride, and for some of us, anxiety,鈥 he said. 鈥淎s long as you follow what you love and try your best, even if it's not perfectly planned, even if it's messy or uncertain, things will work out.鈥
Provost J. Nathaniel Southerland and Vice President of Student Affairs Naima Brown recognized the honors graduates. Dr. Broadie conferred the degrees to close the ceremony, which ended with the Walk of Honor as faculty and staff applauded the graduates.
