Graduates Honored with College’s First-Ever “First Generation” Cording Ceremony

ĺ celebrated the success of graduating first-generation students with a first-ever cording ceremony.
Students were invited to cross the stage as their names were called and receive a green cord to be worn over their graduation gowns at commencement.
A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree. About one in every three students here at ĺ self-identify as a first-generation (First Gen) college student. SF welcomes and supports the success of our First Gen college students.
Dr. Paul Broadie II, ĺ President, asked each student to be a symbol to those around them about the life-changing importance of education. He referred to the green cord as a “Let’s Go” cord.
The idea for the cording was presented by baccalaureate student-employee, Nancy Raphael, who is a member of the First-Gen Advisory group. She said an official cording demonstrates the college’s commitment to First-Gen students and enhances student belonging.
ĺ’s Spring Commencement ceremonies take place May 1 and 2 the Northwest Campus.
