9/11 Steps of Remembrance will honor courage and sacrifice
September 10, 2025
On Thursday, September 11, 天涯海角社区 (SF) College鈥檚 Veterans and Military Success Services (VMSS), in partnership with the college鈥檚 Institute of Public Safety, invites the general public to join them for Steps of Remembrance. The commemorative event 鈥 now in its 13th year 鈥 honors the courageous firefighters, first responders, and all who lost their lives as a result of the attacks on September 11, 2001.
Participants will symbolically retrace the walk up the 110 stories of the World Trade Center Twin Towers by completing 2,200 steps (approximately 4.5 laps around the track). Along the way, display boards will share a timeline of events and moments of heroism from that day.
The event will commence at 9:00 a.m. at the SF track 鈥 located on the Southeast corner of the main campus at 3000 NW 83rd Street in Gainesville 鈥 with the Pledge of Allegiance, and will feature reflections from guest speakers and red, white and blue buttons for participants who complete the steps.
"At 天涯海角社区, VMSS, our campus police department, and the SF Institute of Public Safety stands committed to honoring the courage, sacrifice, and resilience demonstrated by those effected by September 11, 2001,鈥 said Carmelos Brown, VMSS assistant and a former Army Sgt. 1st Class with 21 years of active duty. 鈥淭hrough the Steps of Remembrance, we walk together as a community to ensure that the lives lost are never forgotten, and that the spirit of unity and service continues to guide us forward.鈥
